What is an Implant Retained/Supported Denture
Much like full acrylic dentures, implant retained/ supported dentures are removable, however instead of relying solely on suction to keep them firmly in place they are able to be attached and unattached from dental implants- generally secured in at least 4 points along the jaw.
What are the Benefits of Having Implant Supported Denture
Implant supported dentures are an excellent long term solution for patients experiencing major to total tooth loss, their secured anchor points within the jaw eliminate any slipping or rubbing patients may encounter with traditional dentures that haven’t been properly maintained or adjusted. This extra security aids with bite balance and strength, making them the best option for total replacement of the function and appearance of natural teeth.
Steps Involved
- After a thorough consultation with a dental professional to access your suitability for implant retained dentures using impressions and X-rays. Armed with all the information necessary to make an informed decision a treatment plan will be made.
- The implants need to be placed in a minor surgical procedure where incisions will be made in the gum and small holes are drilled in these locations as an anchor point for the implants.
- Once the implant sites have healed a second minor procedure is needed in order to place caps on the implants to obstruct the gums from growing over them. Shortly after Abutments are attached in order to hold the dentures to the implants.
- Finally, the customised, hand finished dentures can be fitted and the patient can enjoy their new smile!
