What is an Immediate Denture
Immediate (otherwise referred to as temporary) dentures are fitted on the same day as tooth extraction. They differ from full acrylic dentures in that they are not totally personally customised and as such will not look or fit in the same way your final dentures will, they are generally recommended for patients undergoing extensive extractions.
Why Do People Require to Have Immediate Dentures
Patients may elect for immediate dentures as they provide coverage, immediately filling the gaps left from major or full mouth extractions. They can also offer the healing gums protection and minimise blood loss.
Why Do People Require to Have Immediate Dentures
Patients may elect for immediate dentures as they provide coverage, immediately filling the gaps left from major or full mouth extractions. They can also offer the healing gums protection and minimise blood loss.
What are the Clinical and Laboratory Steps for Making Immediate Denture
- Patients may elect for immediate upper and lower dentures as they provide for lost coverage, immediately filling the gaps left from major or full mouth extractions. They can also offer the healing gums protection and minimise blood loss post procedure.
- During initial consultations, your suitability for this kind of denture will be accessed and your dentist will provide a thorough explanation of your tailored treatment plan, from cost to procedural steps and what you can expect during the healing journey as you learn to talk and eat with your new dentures.
- The course of action for extractions varies between individuals. Typically, the upper and lower molars and second premolars are removed first to ensure the patient retains some ease to eat and talk while the next steps are carried out. From moulds taken after these teeth are removed, custom impression trays are crafted by our skilled lab technicians to ensure the most accurate impression of your mouth can be taken to maximise the comfort and fit of your immediate dentures.
- From here your dentist will take a bite registration, discuss colour, size and shape of your new teeth and any adjustments and improvements that can be made to your new smile
- Behind the scenes in the lab with now all the necessary information and impressions our team of prosthetic craftsmen cast, shape, adjust and articulate the denture form to your custom specifications ensuring a polished and even bite.
- Once completed your remaining teeth will be extracted and adjustments may be made to the jaw bone to minimise rubbing and preserve a strong foundation to hold your new dentures.
- After this procedure the immediate dentures will be placed and will need to remain undisturbed for 24 hours acting as a compression bandage over healing gums. After this period of time a brief checkup is needed to access your healing and make any initial adjustments. This continues over the course of some months as the swelling subsides.
- At approximately 6-8 months post procedure the shrinkage of your jaw bone will have considerably slowed and at this point a denture reline will be needed to guarantee ongoing proper fit.
